The Best of 2016: Grafene

Paul and Kathryn Roden embarked on their latest adventure in 2016 when they opened British fine dining venue Grafene on King Street in Manchester. Grafene houses an open pastry kitchen, the Island bar and of course an all-day food offering signed Losehill's own Darren Goodwin.

 

June

The start of summer and the start of Grafene, with all the joys that construction brings with it. Meanwhile, in the Peaks - a slightly different kind of photo shoot...

 

July

Now we're talking! Grafene started to take shape - about as grey as the summer days, though infinitely more exciting - and slowly but surely, opening night loomed. The city center restaurant opened with a bang when Kathryn and Paul gathered friends and family for a launch night to celebrate.

 

August

And... we're off! August was a busy one in both Manchester and the Peaks, but we are so proud of everyone involved and pleased to see both Grafene and Losehill thriving. Chef Darren went on a well deserved holiday...

January

Brill, halibut and peppercorn steak - what a way to start a new year!

 

February

The Goosnargh Guinea Fowl in the middle was our February highlight. However, we wouldn't say no to the BBQ sirloin, or the rump and oxtail either.

 

March

Darren and his team got creative in March with an oxcheek and celeriac lasagne, topped with smoked Wensleydale and parsley.

 

April

Spring came, and brought gorgeous colours and fresh vegetables with it. Spring also came with a delicious vegetarian dish with BBQ English asparagus and soft poached eggs.

 

May

The famed pickled mackerel with chilled sorrel soup, kohlrabi and apple... oh, take us back!

 

September

September saw the Orangery put on a Beef Wellington Wedding (yes, please!) and a seatrout tartare with poached egg yolk.

 

October

As the Autumn leaves fell in Hope Valley we enjoyed a different kind of spag bol - oxtail ragout with salsify, girolles and old Winchester. We also enjoyed copious amounts of Cabrito goat, so much so that October was nicknamed Goatober on Darren's Instagram.

 

November

Hearty meat dishes and a mouthwatering butter roasted halibut with a Arbroath smokie stew; November, you weren't so bad!

 

December

We ended the year in style with Herdwick lamb, salmon with smoked mussels and some more Cabrito goat meat, because you can never have enough goat.

Chatsworth House

Step into an enchanting winter wonderland this festive season as Chatsworth celebrates the time honoured classic 'The Nutcracker'.

Join Clare on her adventures as she is swept away by the Nutcracker Prince and explore a beautifully decked out Chatsworth House and Gardens. Chatsworth will be open until 8pm on select evenings until the 16th of December; they will be holding floral demonstrations and workshops; a Christmas willow workshop and a special Estate farm shop Christmas pie and pea supper.

The Marquee at the Pavilion Gardens in Buxton will be filled with stalls offering unique and thoughtful Christmas gifts for your loved ones.

Bakewell Winter Wonderland

Christmas fun for the whole family!

Bakewell Showground will truly be a Winter Wonderland on the 9th, 10th & 11th of December - come say hello to two of Santa's reindeer and visit Santa's grotto, and enjoy craft stalls and festive entertainment. There will be brass bands, fireworks, snow machines and a Bus Bar.

The Bakewell Choral Society will be singing carols on Friday the 16th of December and they'd love for you to join them - or you could soak up the atmosphere whilst sipping hot drinks and enjoying mince pies.

Dress the Well

Well dressing - also known as well flowering - is a summer custom that is closely associated with the Peak District. It involves decorating wells and springs with flower petals and the custom is said to date back to the Black Death, when it was done to give thanks for the purity of the water.

During the August Bank Holiday weekend you can experience well dressing in the Peak District village of Eyam, a 20 minute drive from Losehill House.

From 24th to 27th August you can watch well dressers as they work to dress the well. The well dressers will draw out their designs and outline them with sweet Cecily seeds, before they colour them in with petals, leaves and seeds. The finished well dressing will be on display in the centre of the village from27th August to 3rd September.

Grafene has an open pastry kitchen and is home to the Island bar. The Island serves light bites, vintage champagne, local beers and scientifically-inspired signature cocktails. The restaurant also has two private dining areas dedicated to wine tastings and pairings.

From the Countryside to the City

Kathryn and Paul Roden, owners of Losehill House Hotel & Spa, are bringing the best of the Orangery Restaurant to Manchester when opening city centre restaurant Grafene in July.

The Roden’s British fine dining venue on King Street will house a restaurant with an all-day food offering signed Losehill House chef Darren Goodwin, an open pastry kitchen and the Island bar. The bar will serve vintage champagne, local beers and scientifically inspired drinks – a nod to Manchester innovation graphene, which inspired the name of the restaurant.

“Grafene is our food and drink interpretation of this exciting new chapter in Manchester’s rich history, and of the excitement and energy there is around its possibilities for science and technology.”

If you are familiar with Losehill House and the Orangery Restaurant you will undoubtedly recognise Darren Goodwin’s influence on the Grafene menu, which consists of a daily-changing a la carte menu, a seven course tasting experience and a selection of small plates. However, Losehill House patrons need not fear – Darren is not leaving the Peaks behind for the bright city lights, and will be overseeing both the Orangery and Grafene kitchens.

Kathryn and Paul Roden have made Losehill House a Peak District destination and with Grafene they are looking to offer a truly unique experience in the heart of Manchester City.

Television presenter Julia Bradbury is poised to return to her Peak District roots for the final episode of her current prime-time ITV series.

Julia - who developed her love for the outdoors during childhood walks in the area with her Tideswell-born father Michael - will sign off the eight-week run of Best Walks With A View With Julia Bradbury on Friday April 15 by following in the footsteps of the famous 1932 mass trespassers on Kinder Scout. 

Setting off from Edale, she will explore the first five miles of the Pennine Way, including the Kinder plateau, the area's highest point, which played a pivotal role in the creation of Britain's national parks and public access to the countryside. 

En route, she will catch up with and share some happy early memories with her dad, will meet Edale-based wooden bowl maker Robin Wood and hard-working mountain rescue volunteers who keep visitors safe while enjoying some of the country's wildest, specially-protected landscapes. 

Julia's Peak District walk is included in honour of those who helped open up our countryside to visitors from all corners of the world, and ends with a spectacular panorama across Edale.

During filming for Best Walks With A View - which features her favourite, most accessible family treks with great scenery, local history and a perfect pub lunch or picnic - Julia and the production team stayed at four-star Losehill House Hotel & Spa and five-star Underleigh B&B, both in Hope, and at award-winning Stonecroft Guesthouse, Edale.

"I've got my dad Michael to thank for my love of the Peak District," said Julia. "He introduced me to walking there when I was just six or seven. In our spare time we'd stride out across the hills and moors. He made up stories as we went, to make each walk a real adventure, and today I'm lucky enough to make walking my work."

We know that one of the reasons our guests choose to stay with us is for our fabulous location in the midst of the Hope Valley. Losehill House provides easy access to some of the most celebrated walking routes in Derbyshire.

For our guests who love the outdoors, there is a new weekly TV series beginning this Friday (19th February, 8pm, ITV) which will highlight some of the finest walks across the country. Naturally the Peaks are included! ‘Best Walks With A View’ will be presented by Julia Bradbury, TV’s very own queen of the outdoors, and has eight episodes each looking at a different family-friendly trek. Julia has selected walks that are all under 10 miles so can easily be done in a day. Each showcase the many varied and exceptional views of the British countryside. We’re particularly excited for the episode on Kinder Scout, as we were lucky enough to host Julia and her team for their filming in the Peak District. Recommended Winter Walks

If you are staying at Losehill House over the next few weeks, or if you simply plan to spend some time in the Peak District, we can recommend some fantastic wintery walks for you that are all an easy distance from the hotel.

Be sure to pack your walking boots, your raincoat and a good map. Be sure to stop by at the hotel once you’re finished for some well-earned relaxation!
 

Stanage Edge

A 6.5 mile walk beginning in Hathersage, this takes you through some utterly beautiful locations. Pass through country tracks up to Stanage Edge – there will almost certainly be some rock climbers out, and you may want to have a go yourself! The walk returns to Hathersage along countryside lanes. Ridge Walk: Mam Tor to Losehill

Despite being very elevated, this walk is fairly easy – so it’s a great way to take in the incredible views while still enjoying a leisurely stroll. 5 miles long, this walk takes you over and beyond one of the Peak District’s most recognisable hills, Mam Tor. It starts at the National Trust’s Mam Nick car park and finished at Lose Hill, very close to our hotel. More info.
 

Ladybower Reservoir and Derwent Edge

With a length of over 10 miles and plenty of climbing, this walk is more advanced than the previous two listed, but well worth the effort! The trail takes you alongside the reservoir and through lush woodland, up onto the moor tops which are populated by historical cairns and fascinating geological structures. The walk begins at Cut Throat Bridge so we recommend you drive. Once you arrive back at the hotel, be sure to treat yourself to well-earned dip in our hot tub to thaw out! More info.

The year is slowly drawing to a close and we can feel the chilly temperatures creeping up on us. Thankfully we have the perfect antidote to the long, dark nights.

Our Featured Break is our Winter Spa Special, valid between 2nd November 2015 and 31st March 2015. Alternatively, you can stroll through our grounds or up to one of the nearby picturesque villages.

Should you stay with us for Christmas Eve, we serve a festive afternoon tea on arrival, with a heart-warming glass of mulled wine to go with it. Then you can enjoy a welcome reception of Kir Royale and canapés  before dinner, while our regular pianist accompanies with a repertoire of Christmas tunes.

Christmas morning begins with the ultimate luxury - a champagne breakfast! As is to be expected, our four course Christmas Lunch is a leisurely and sumptuous affair, commencing with a champagne reception. As evening rolls in, you might start to feel a little peckish - thankfully we put on an informal buffet, with a range of hot and cold dishes.

Boxing Day kicks off with a gentle Losehill brunch, then the day is free to spend as you choose. No Boxing Day is complete without turkey sandwiches, and we can provide you with a packed lunch if you wish to explore outside! Finally, it's time to dress up and indulge once again for our Black Tie sumptuous 4 course dinner, where we'll be accompanied by the fantastic Duffy Brothers. Don’t forget to leave room for coffee and mince pies!

Autumn Dishes 2015

Autumn is certainly in full swing here at Losehill House – we’re waking up to morning mists falling over the surrounding hills, and the trees in our grounds are looking beautiful with their red and gold leaves. The season has also had an effect on our a-la-carte menu, which changes daily depending on what’s available at our local markets.

We’re currently creating lots of hearty, warming dishes using seasonal vegetables such as squash and celeriac. Look out for hare on our menu too – with a unique earthy, ‘wild’ taste, this is the perfect accompaniment to the colder weather.

Halloween Spooktacular

Would you like to carve pumpkin lanterns or make spooky craft? The Chestnut Centre are inviting you to join them in some spooktacular fun from 1pm – 4pm every day during half term. On Friday 30th at 4pm a guide will take all visitors for a spooky walk in the park… any ghosts will surely be scared away by your glowing lantern!

Liquid Light Exhibition

Liquid Light is an exhibition of images by local photographer Michela Griffith. Griffith has spent a lot of time over the last three years looking at the River Dove in the Peak District, and the end result is this exhibition at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery. The artist herself will be there on the 31st October from 2pm – 4pm.
